Best places to travel to in December

As we officially enter winter, the urge to escape inevitably rises. That coupled with the busy holiday season results in the most expensive time of the year to travel. Any international flights for December should be booked a solid 3 months in advance and at least a month ahead for short-haul flights. Fares are expected to be 2x-3x their normal prices as companies know travellers will need to:

a) fly home for the holidays

b) escape the holiday madness

c) cross off a common bucket list choice of spending NYE in a different country

Whether you’re traveling for family or leisure this holiday season, we have a few destinations below worth checking out.

For the avid traveler or bucket list aficionado: Thailand

For travellers on the northern hemisphere, there’s no place like Asia. The long-distance flight alone is an experience in itself. Temples. Beaches. Some of the best street food in the world and amazing post-monsoon season weather. Thailand is an eclectic country ready to satisfy any traveler’s desire. Having already established that traveling in December will cost you, why not make it a splurge on a trip to Southeast Asia where at least on-the-ground costs are low. 4 stars accommodations begin around the $30 mark and typically include breakfast.

ALTERNATIVE: Bali for its spiritual influence, its laidback vibe and infinite beaches. Expect to make lots of Australian friends.

For the winter lover: Aspen, CO

Some people genuinely love winter. Snow. A warm mug. Shorter days and longer nights. While we can’t relate, we understand that there are a ton of activities winter calls for. For the snow lover, Aspen is a perfect destination for winter fun or sightseeing. There’s a reason celebrities flock to this gorgeous town each year to ski and chill.

ALTERNATIVE: New York City is known for many things and amongst them is their wonderful holiday lights’ display. A great family destination for the holidays.

For the snow birds: Dominican Republic

For those wanting an escape from the cold, without having to spend hours on a flight, Punta Cana is a tropical paradise. Whether you want to lay beachfront at a resort or take a wild on the adventurous side with activities like parasailing and zip lining, both coasts of the Dominican are bound to offer you an unforgettable experience. If you prefer the ‘white sand, blue waters’ vibe, head over to Punta Cana. If you’re down to explore and feel like a local or work on your golf swing, go to Puerto plata instead.

ALTERNATIVE: Mexico is for the people, by the people. That should be the slogan for this vivacious country but alas, that’s just the way it makes most travellers feel. At home.
